Sabato 26 e Domenica 27 Agosto, nelle storiche Cantine dei Marchesi Incisa della Rocchetta (Rocchetta Tanaro – AT), andrà in scena il “Rocchetta Grand Jetè“, un gala di danza con le stelle del Royal Ballet di Londra. A presentare l’evento sarà la Prima Solista della compagnia londinese Meaghan Grace Hinkis, americana di nascita ma stabilita a Londra per danzare i capolavori di Ashton, MacMillan e gli altri. In questa intervista, Meaghan ci racconta dei suoi primi passi nel mondo della danza, del passaggio dall’ABT al Royal Ballet e delle coreografie che vedremo al gala.

Ciao Meaghan e grazie per essere qui con DANZA&Balletto Magazine. Lei è una ballerina molto famosa e apprezzata, attualmente Prima Solista del Royal Ballet di Londra. Quando ha iniziato a danzare e quando ha deciso di diventare una ballerina professionista?

Ciao e grazie mille per la gentile introduzione. Io ho iniziato a danzare a quattro anni, allenandomi in tutti i tipi di danza, dal jazz al tip-tap, facendo anche un po’ di danza classica. Quando avevo undici anni ho iniziato ad esercitarmi sempre di più nel classico e da lì mi sono veramente innamorata di quest’arte. Un anno dopo sapevo di voler diventare una ballerina professionista e ho amato ogni momento di quel processo.

A 13 anni ha vinto una borsa di studio per il Youth America Grand Prix, che le ha consentito di studiare alla Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis School all’American Ballet Theatre. Nel 2007 è poi entrata nell’ABT Studio Company e nel 2010 si è diplomata. Può raccontarci come è stata la sua esperienza con l’ABT?

L’esperienza con l’ABT mi ha cambiato la vita! Il periodo trascorso alla JKO School è stato necessario per gettare le basi della tecnica, che è ciò a cui ricorro ancora oggi, mentre L’ABT Studio Company mi ha mostrato come sarebbe stata la vita in compagnia e mi ha permesso di scoprire la mia libertà artistica. Facevamo molte tournée e ci esibivamo sui palchi di tutto il mondo. È stata un’esperienza incredibile! Quando poi sono entrata nella compagnia principale, ho incontrato i miei idoli. Non potevo credere che stavo danzando accanto a loro, che si sono poi rivelati davvero gentili nei miei confronti, mi hanno insegnato molto su come costruire una carriera lunga e piena di successi. Il periodo con l’ABT avrà sempre un posto molto speciale nel mio cuore.

Nel 2011 è entrata nel Royal Ballet e nel 2021 è stata promossa Prima Solista. Perché ha deciso di cambiare compagnia? E quali sono le principali differenze che ha riscontrato con l’ABT?

La principale ragione che mi ha spinto a cambiare compagnia è stata semplicemente che non potevo rifiutare l’opportunità di danzare con il Royal Ballet di Londra: era la compagnia dei miei sogni e ho sempre amato il loro repertorio. Ashton e MacMillan sono, secondo me, due dei migliori coreografi mai esistiti e in questo modo ho avuto l’occasione di immergermi nel loro mondo. Non potevo non andare! Ci sono molte somiglianze tra le due compagnie, soprattutto nel fatto che sono entrambe istituzioni mondiali ricche di persone talentuose. Direi che la più grande differenza sta nei nostri programmi di performance dato che, con il Royal Ballet, siamo alla Royal Opera House tutto l’anno, quindi abbiamo sempre accesso al palco e ci esibiamo continuamente. A differenza di quanto facevamo all’ABT, qui non dobbiamo mai muoverci in teatri differenti, a meno che non siamo in tournée. Ad ogni modo sono entrambe delle compagnie bellissime che adoro!

Qual era il suo ruolo preferito nell’ABT e quale è adesso nel Royal Ballet?

Questa domanda è davvero troppo difficile! Posso dire che uno dei miei balletti preferiti di tutti i tempi è “A Month in the Country” di Frederick Ashton. Adoro danzare il ruolo di Vera ma ci sono troppi ruoli preferiti per citarne uno solo!

Nel 2020, la pandemia da Covid-19 ha costretto i danzatori ad allontanarsi dal palcoscenico. In quel periodo, il Royal Ballet ha lanciato l’iniziativa “A Bottle for the Arts”, in collaborazione con i Marchesi Incisa della Rocchetta. Come vi ha aiutato?

L’iniziativa “A Bottle for the Arts” ci ha aiutato a tornare sul palcoscenico! La pandemia ha avuto un impatto devastante sull’industria delle arti performative e abbiamo davvero pensato che non avremmo mai più potuto trovarci di nuovo di fronte a un pubblico. La collaborazione con i Marchesi Incisa della Rocchetta ci ha permesso di tornare a ciò per cui viviamo: appunto esibirci di fronte al pubblico. Siamo tutti eternamente grati per il supporto di questa bellissima cantina!

Adesso la collaborazione con i Marchesi Incisa della Rocchetta sta continuando. In particolare, nella bellissima cornice delle loro storiche cantine è previsto il gala “Rocchetta Grand Jetè”, a cui parteciperanno alcune stelle del Royal Ballet. Come è nata l’idea dell’evento?

L’idea è nata un paio di anni fa quando Francesca (Massone Incisa della Rocchetta, ndr) è venuta in Inghilterra per assistere a un gala di beneficienza che avevo organizzato, “Ballet at Athelhampton”, ed è diventata una delle miei più preziose sostenitrici. Francesca ha avuto la meravigliosa idea di portare un gala simile nella sua cantina e io mi sono innamorata dell’idea: sapevo che sarebbe stata un’esperienza unica e indimenticabile. Due anni di pianificazione ed eccoci qui!

Il Gala si terrà Sabato 26 e Domenica 27 Agosto. Con quali colleghi condividerà il palcoscenico?

Le esibizioni del Gala mostreranno alcune tra le stelle del Royal Ballet: i Principal Steven McRae, Sarah Lamb, Matthew Ball, Mayara Magri, Ryoichi Hirano, Anna Rose O’Sullivan, e Laura Morera, i First Soloist Meaghan Grace Hinkis (io stessa) e Luca Acri, i Soloist Mariko Sasaki, Lukas Brændsrød e David Donnelly e i First Artist Giacomo Rovero e Daichi Ikarashi. Abbiamo anche due musicisti dalla Royal Opera House che si uniranno a noi: Sergey Levitin (Primo Violino) e Michael Pansters (Pianista del Royal Ballet).

Può anticiparci qualcosa sulle coreografie che vedremo sul palco?

Presenteremo una vasta gamma di opera prese dal balletto classico e da quello contemporaneo. Ho scelto con cura sia lavori che potessero rappresentare il cuore del repertorio del Royal Ballet, sia balletti meno conosciuti al pubblico di tutto il mondo. Ci saranno coreografie di Christopher Wheeldon, Wayne McGregor, Frederick Ashton e Kenneth MacMillan, ma anche balletti creati dal First Soloist del Royal Ballet Valentino Zucchetti e dall’ex Principal Johan Kobborg.

È stato un vero piacere Meaghan, grazie di nuovo. Non vediamo l’ora di vederla, con gli altri ballerini, al Gala.

Hello Meaghan, and thank you for your time with DANZA&Balletto Magazine. We all know you are a famous and appreciated dancer, so I would like to ask when you began dancing and decided to become a professional dancer.

Hello, Thank you so much for the warm introduction. I began dancing when I was 4 years old. I trained in all types of dance from jazz to tap and  a little bit of ballet. When I was 11 years old, I started training more and more in ballet and really fell in love with the art form. One year later, I knew I wanted to be a professional ballet dancer and loved every moment of the process!

At 13, you won a scholarship at the Youth America Grand Prix to study at the Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis School of American Ballet Theatre, so you entered the ABT Studio Company in 2007 and graduated in 2010. What was your experience with ABT?

My experience with ABT was life changing! My time at the JKO School was imperative in laying the foundation of my technique which is what I fall back on to this day. ABT Studio Company showed me what company life would be like and allowed me to discover my artistic freedom. We toured a lot and performed on stages all over the world. It was an incredible experience! When I joined the main company, I met my idols. I couldn’t believe I was dancing alongside them. They were so kind to me and taught me so much about how to build a long and successful career. My time at ABT will forever hold a very special place in my heart.

In 2011 you joined the Royal Ballet, and in 2021 you were promoted to First Soloist. Why did you change company? And what are the main differences between dancing in the ABT and in the Royal Ballet? 

The main reason I changed companies was simply because I couldn’t turn down an opportunity to dance for The Royal Ballet in London. It was a dream company of mine and I have always loved the repertory that the company dances. Ashton and MacMillan are, in my opinion, two of the best choreographers to ever exist and I had the chance to dive into their world. I just couldn’t not go! There are a lot of similarities with the two companies in that they are both world class institutions filled with immense amounts of talent. I would say our performance schedules are the biggest difference as we are at the Royal Opera House year round so we always have access to the stage and are constantly performing. We never have to move into a different theater unless we are on tour, which is quite different from ABT, but both are beautiful companies that I love!

What was your favorite ballet role in the ABT, and what’s now in the Royal Ballet? 

This question is way too difficult to answer! I can say that one of my all time favorite ballets is Frederick Ashton’s, “A Month in the Country”. I adore dancing the role of Vera but there are too many favorite roles to just name one!

In 2020, the Covid-19 pandemic caused dancers to leave the stage. In that period, the Royal Ballet launched the “A Bottle for the Arts” initiative in collaboration with Marchesi Incisa della Rocchetta. How has it helped all of you?

The “A Bottle for the Arts” initiative helped bring us back to the stage! The pandemic had a devastating impact on the performing arts industry and we really thought we might never stand in front of an audience again. The collaboration with Marchesi Incisa della Rocchetta allowed us to get back to what we live for – performing in front of an audience! We are all eternally grateful for the support of this beautiful winery!

Now the collaboration with Marchesi Incisa della Rocchetta continues. In particular, with the “Rocchetta Grand Jetè” dance gala with Royal Ballet stars in the beautiful frame of their historic wine cellars. How was the idea born?

The idea was born a couple years ago when Francesca came to England to watch a charity gala I organized in England called, Ballet at Athelhampton. She became one of my most treasured supporters. Francesca had the wonderful idea of bringing a similar gala to her winery and I fell in love with the idea and knew it was going to be a unique and unforgettable experience. Two years of planning and here we are!

The Gala will be on Saturday, August 26th, and Sunday, August 27th. Which colleagues will you share the stage with?

The gala performances will feature Principals of the Royal Ballet – Steven McRae, Sarah Lamb, Matthew Ball, Mayara Magri, Ryoichi Hirano, Anna Rose O’Sullivan, and Laura Morera. First Soloists – Meaghan Grace Hinkis (myself) and Luca Acri. Soloists- Mariko Sasaki, Lukas Brændsrød, David Donnelly, and finally, First Artists – Giacomo Rovero and Daichi Ikarashi. We have two musicians from the Royal Opera House joining us as well – Sergey Levitin (concertmaster) and Michael Pansters (Royal Ballet pianist).

May you tell us something about the choreographies we will see on stage?

We will be presenting a large range of works from classical to contemporary ballet. I have carefully chosen ballets that are at the heart of The Royal Ballet’s repertory and also ballets that are less commonly known to audiences around the world. There will be ballets by Christopher Wheeldon, Wayne McGregor, Frederick Ashton and Kenneth MacMillan as well as ballets by First Soloist of The Royal Ballet, Valentino Zucchetti and former Principal of The Royal Ballet, Johan Kobborg.
